The Guest List: Lovefingers shares ten certified sunset classics

The revered selector and ESP Institute head hand-picks an unmissable selection

There aren't too many facets of underground dance music to which Andrew 'Lovefingers' Hogge hasn't successfully turned his hands over the past twenty-or-so years.

Driven by an undying love of sharing music, Lovefingers' genre-surfing DJ sets have seen him garner a reputation as one of the most imaginative selectors in the game. His collaborations with the likes of Lee Douglas (as The Stallions) and Eddie Ruscha (as Secret Fingers) have led to a profusion of memorable moments, while his appearances at the esoteric underground's most respected venues live equally long in the collective consciousness of the dancers he entertained. The music he curates via his ESP Institute label routinely finds its way into the hearts and minds of the most discerning jocks, with a polychromatic sound signature that's every bit as hard to define as one might expect from such an eclectically-minded spirit. The label has proved a forceful proponent of music mined in the Asian depths, with sounds from Chida, Ground, Hoshina Anniversary, Powder, Chee Shimizu, and Mr Ho among those to have found an ESP Institute home.

Lovefingers' latest tour sees him take in a show close to home, with a sunset session booked at Singapore's Rumours Beach Club on October 14. With this in mind, we took the opportunity to reach out for a bespoke The Guest List top ten and were naturally thrilled with what came back.

A protagonist whose sonic selections are respected by even the most cynical of dusty-fingered diggers, it's always a delight to glean an insight into his curatorial secrets, so it's with no small measure of pleasure that we present his hand-picked chart of sunset specials, chosen especially for Mixmag Asia.

1
Kerri Chandler - Kaiku (Disco Version)

"This one I just bought today. I’m a sucker for violin solos in House. This will melt you."

2
Black Science Orchestra - New Jersey Deep

"All time classic and top fave of mine. Guitar scale steps up, synths slip down. Pure sex."

3
Gabor Szabo - Keep Smilin’

"More gangster business. Chugging California masterpiece"

4
Alex Kassian - Strings Of Eden

"Brilliant uplifting chords, sparsely arranged like the reference 'Spirit Of Eden' suggests"

5
MODE - Lo-Fi Odyssey (Stallions Remix)

"Sorry to throw my own track in here, but it was made with sunset in mind, so…"

6
Maxwell - Till The Cops (Timmy Regisford & Adam Rios Instrumental)

"This one is a bit pumping but still has that ultimate sunset feel for me, that Metheney-esque synth lead. Perfect for transitioning the last of sunset into the start of night."

7
Pet Shop Boys - We All Feel Better In The Dark (Brothers In Rhythm Ambient Mix)

"My wife reminded me about this remix a few weeks ago in Ibiza. Balearic of the highest order. Pro tip: drop it at 33 rpm (instead of 45) to unlock the secrets of Es Vedra."

8
Full Service - Berlin Romance

"Random obscure instrumental record from Germany 1989 that contains library-adjacent jams. Big drums and FM synthesis, all aboard."

9
Kash - Percussion Sundance

"Big cinematic tune from the Fingertracks days. This is what it sounds like speeding down the coast highway top down."

10
Eddie Henderson - Say You Will

"All-time jazz-funk monster that has the ultimate blurry soaring trumpet lines over relentless rolling drum/bassline/chicken-scratch lock-up. Class."
