Hello: Marmosets aka Kingkong
Bangkok's chief selector, mover and shaker
Zoo Studio is described as “a gang of musical animals gather up, they make sound the way they want to, without any meaow from any fat cat.” What does that mean and can you describe the ethos and role behind Zoo Studio?
In 2011 I formed Zoo Studio to be an electronic music label, an event organizer and a place for music production for any media. The name Zoo Studio comes from my old studio at my family 's house. My mom had a lot of animal, like four dogs, 10 cats, 2 chickens, birds, etc. So I thought my studio should called Zoo Studio.
The phrase "they make sound the way they want to, without any meaow from any fat cat” means that we make music that we love without anyone giving us any orders.
TEMPO seems very much like a Thai version of Mixmag. Would you agree? What’s the story behind it and how does it operate?
I wouldn’t say so but if people think that then we are happy to hear iy. At first, we only planned to make a website about electronic music, art, fashion and lifestyle but now a lot of other projects are coming our way. Sometimes we do events and parties like Tempology Festival and Tempo Live (live streaming). Sometimes we also consult for brands that want electronic music in their projects. The creative agency side sometimes organizes events and concerts like OD - Prodigy live in Bangkok, Beam Fest, UFO and more.
You’re a man of many, many projects – it’s impressive. What is UFO?
Myself, Kob from Kor.Bor.Vor and Pipe from Wav Collective [Superrzaaap] founded UFO. The slogan of UFO is space creator association and it’s a really interesting project as sometimes if we find some abandoned spaces or a new space that hasn’t been used before, we will create something in that space. It might be a party, a workshop, a gallery, a pop-up café, pop up bars, etc. For example, we did a pop-up club called ‘High Voltage Club’ on the 2nd floor of Bad Motel. We also host a monthly party called ‘Off The Grid’ at Dark Bar and the concept is playing only tracks that we never get to play anywhere.
What are the biggest challenges in the Thai underground music market?
I think if we are in this scene .For Artist or Djs ,The biggest thing is ..You should make your work to be unique, have your own sound, and Be honests with yourself and your people. And you should respect everyone.
Who are some other up and coming Thai artists that people should look out for?
There are a lot of up and coming artists this year but I can answer tell you about the ones that I see. As for DJs, look out for Noxro, Mendy Indigo, NT66, Sarayu and Mela. As for producers, Spacetalexxx, Q Narongwate, DOTT, X0809 and Cut The Crab are coming up in Thailand.
In five years, I will be…
The same as this year – a producer, DJ, music director and beer lover.
If the world were ending, what’s the last record you would play?
Underworld ‘Born Slippy’
