Yellow Magic Orchestra’s 1980 Tokyo show to broadcast for the first time in 43 years
The show was part of their 1980 World Tour
Way ahead of their time, in 1980 Yellow Magic Orchestra set out around the world on tour. The trio first went to England and from there, went on to perform in Germany, France, Italy and the United States.
For the first time in 43 years, the group's rare Tokyo performance from the Nippon Budokan Large Hall will be broadcast on television in Japan. Fans in the country can tune in on March 3, 2023 on Fuji TV TWO drama/anime at 9:30pm for the showing. For the rest of us, we can only hope it will eventually make its way onto YouTube...
Consisting of members Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto and the late Yukihiro Takahashi, who passed in January of this year, Yellow Magic Orchestra are lauded as pioneers of electronic dance music alongside artists like Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder. They released World Tour 1980 as a live album which came paired with a book with photographs taken during the tour, as both a 2-CD set and a 3-LP set (with 3–5 songs spread over 5 sides).
While you wait for a visual, listen to an audio recording of the album, from performances in London (October 16), Paris (October 27) and Los Angeles (November 7).
