Aphex Twin's rare Yamaha GX-1 synth is currently up for auction
Currently listed at £99,950, the rare piece of kit is one of only 100 ever created by the manufacturer

A rare, vintage Yamaha GX-1 synthesiser owned by Aphex Twin is currently up for auction.
Currently available to bid on via auction site VEMIA, the iconic instrument currently has a starting price of £99,950 — with the item listing sharing details on the synth's history, claiming AFX used the same website to purchase it "years ago" from renowned 60s pop producer Mickie Most.

Having launched in 1973, the Yamaha GX-1 Is said to be one of just 100 created by the Japanese manufacturer — featuring dual-tone programmers, speakers and a foot pedalboard.
Aphex, AKA Richard D James, is said to have used the synth prominently throughout his work — with his 2007 track 'GX1 Solo', from LP 'Rushup Edge' released under his The Tuss moniker, named after the instrument.

The GX-1 has been upgraded throughout its ownership by Aphex, enlisting Berlin-based synth expert Colin Fraser to "painstakingly" retrofit the unit with MIDI capabilities.
