Oscar-winning Director Alex Gibney portrays the life of Fela Anikulapo Kuti
He has to be one of the most prolific musical icons to walk this planet — the effervescent Fela Kuti invented afrobeat and almost single-handedly exported the sound of Nigeria to the rest of the world. Even after over twenty years since his passing in 1997, the social and political implications he voiced from the 70’s and onwards, still remain just as relevant and pertinent today.
The Nigerian artist has been archived in audio documents over the years, but it wasn’t until 2011 that ‘Finding Fela!’ changed that for the screen. Directed by Oscar-winner Alex Gibney, ‘Finding Fela!’ unravels the legend’s musical journey while shedding light on the political and social influence and important Fela stood and fought for.
In times when the world feels more oppressive than it should, turning back to the human saviours from our yesteryears often help with understanding today’s predicaments.
