Burning Man festival has just announced its 2022 theme as “Waking Dreams”.
The festival has said that this theme will “explore the transformative power of dreams, both literal and figurative, and celebrate the dreamers who channel this potent energy in eye-opening, often surrealistic, sometimes life-changing ways.”
The lengthy journal post, penned by Stuart Magnum- director of the Philosophical Center of Burning Man Project, went over some of the ways that dreams and surrealism play a role in the Burning Man experience, but it didn't go into detail on how the theme will play out during the next event.
When thousands of people gather in Northern Nevada for Burning Man 2022, it will have been three years since the last official Burning Man.
Stuart Magnum describes that time as "a thousand days and nights of pent-up hopes and desires, all coiled up in our psyches and ready to burst out onto the blank canvas of the Black Rock Desert."
The full post explores the history of dreaming and focuses on the topic of surrealism.
“That reintegration of dreaming and waking consciousness that fuels surrealism also sounds a lot like how many people describe their Burning Man experience, as a sort of waking dream… It is a signature aspect of Burning Man culture that we transform our dreams into actions in the world. Not just an inner transformation but an externalization of that vision, bending the arc of reality toward the fantastic and bringing the world along for the ride.”
The festival will return to Black Rock City, however exact dates are still unknown.
Organisers have told attendees and supporters to "get ready for 2022."
After a long hazy blur of pandemic insomnia, unanchored in time and adrift between sleeping and waking, it’s time to start imagining the future again. And with exactly that in mind, we’re excited to reveal this year’s Burning Man theme: “Waking Dreams.” ✨https://t.co/oBfh1vKQR7— Burning Man Project (@burningman) October 14, 2021
