TikTok ends music service, partners with South Korea’s Melon for Add to Music App

TikTok Music, the standalone streaming service launched by ByteDance, will officially shut down on November 28, 2024.

Initially introduced in countries such as Indonesia, Brazil, and Australia, TikTok Music aimed to challenge established players like Spotify and Apple Music but faced challenges in scaling globally.

With the closure of its music service, TikTok is now focusing on its Add to Music App feature, which allows users to save songs discovered on the platform to their preferred streaming services.

This feature is already integrated with global music platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. Most recently, South Korean streaming giant Melon has joined the line-up, further expanding the feature’s global reach.

“Since the launch of Add To Music App, we have seen the TikTok community fully embrace the opportunity to save the songs they discover to the music streaming service of their choice,” said Michael Kümmerle, TikTok’s Global Head of Music Partnership Development.

Minwoo Han, head of the Melon Business Department at Kakao Entertainment Corp., adds: “We believe that our partnership with TikTok, which is the leading social media platform for music discovery, will be incredibly popular with our existing users and attract more music fans.”

The Add to Music App feature is designed to streamline music discovery, allowing users to save tracks directly to their streaming libraries from TikTok’s viral videos.

Once a user selects their preferred platform—whether it’s Melon, Spotify, or others—their future saves will automatically sync to that service. Users can even organise tracks into existing or new playlists.
