The Big Questions: Truncate

Where are you answering these questions from?

Currently on Redang Island in Malaysia

What's the most unique hotel you’ve ever stayed in?

I can’t remember the name of the hotel, but it was in Berlin and each room had its own theme and mine was like a hospital room, it was weird.

What was the worst job you had before you were a successful touring artist?

I once worked at a Fedex sorting facility loading trailers with boxes by hand during the graveyard shift

What's your favorite band/music right now outside of the dance music industry?

I’m really into Flying Lotus and that type of hip hop/instrumentals. Also a big fan of Madlib and J-Dilla, Stones Throw Records that sorta vibe.

Do you have any pre-gig rituals or superstitions?

To be honest I really don’t...maybe a quick beer/drink before the show, but nothing else. I’m usually ready to go before a gig!

What's your lamest claim to fame besides DJing?

Back in high school I was also known as the barber - I gave hair cuts to friends in my garage.

What's the strangest cultural thing a promoter has ever taken you to do?

I don’t know if you could call it strange but when in Japan I was taken to a hot spring in Arima and had to be completely nude in front of a bunch of strangers including the promoter. It was a bit weird for me haha.

What is one place that a visit home isn’t complete without?

Stearns Liquor (my local beer shop)

What are your hobbies besides DJing?

Currently getting into brewing beer, I’ve always wanted to do that.

The biggest regret or missed opportunity with respect to your music career?

No regrets ; )

Describe your dancing style?

Beer in hand nodding my head.

What is the most embarrassing thing you have ever done while performing?

One that I can think of is there was a time I was playing in Amsterdam and my laptop froze and completely shut down during my set. I made it look like it was the sound systems fault while I restarted my laptop.

What's the best interview question you've ever been asked (besides this one)?

In-N-Out or Shake Shack

The strangest thing you've ever eaten while on tour?

Raw horse meat : /

If you could spend a day with anyone on the planet, who would it be?

Larry David

What do you like to spend your money on?

Craft beer and records

Go-to hangover food?

Tacos

What's the weirdest thing you've ever seen happening from the DJ booth?

Well on this Asia tour, I played a show where these two girls spent the first hour of my set taking what seemed like hundred selfies directly in front of the DJ booth. I found that weird haha.

What's the weirdest thing you've ever seen happening from the DJ booth?

Most recently I was doing a closing set at a show somewhere in Europe and was playing my last track when all of the sudden we heard loud bangs (which I thought were part of the track) and the crowd suddenly scattered from the dance floor and cleared out - then learned it was gun shots! That’s something I thought I would never witness in Europe to be honest.

Weapon of choice?

Anything from Truncate
