Simone De Kunovich returns to Mule Musiq with the final chapter of his 'Mondo Nuovo' series
Leftfield house, immersive ambient and grubby acid textures combine on the 'Addio Mondo Nuovo' EP
Japan's Mule Musiq welcome Simone De Kunovich back into the fold with the final instalment of his 'Mondo Nuovo' series.
'Addio Mondo Nuovo' (Italian for 'goodbye new world') features six far-reaching tracks each embodied with the alluring idiosyncracies that have been a feature of De Kunovich's previous releases.
Aside from being a self-styled "Avant-garde Conservative," Venetian-born De Kunovich is a diligent student of film and the arts. Each edition of 'Mondo Nuovo' saw him dig deep into the archives of the mondo and exploitation film genres, sampling oddball soundbites before reframing them alongside his distinctive musical beds. His alluring soundscapes morph from immersive ambient textures to mind-melting psychedelia, with each imaginatively-spun track pleasingly stubborn to neatly categorise.
The title track here is arguably the pick of the bunch, with marimba melodies skipping across loose and limber drums as birdsong and evocative chants glide across the sun-mottled panorama. The percussion builds as an exotic horn solo rises in, the music gently dissipating into the misty forest landscape. Elsewhere, the rush-inducing pads and abstract bursts of 'Path To Eternity' prove rather striking, and the soul-soothing ambience of 'See You On The Other Side Of The RIver' is no-less atmospheric. The joyful acid thrust of 'Inverno Verde' is another contender for dancefloor standout, with its lively vocal chops and proto-house rhythms, while the propulsive percussion of 'Primal Dream' is another seductively floor-focused heater.
The first instalment of the three-part series arrived in 2019 on the Superconscious Records label run by Fantastic Man and Francis Inferno Orchestra. Part two followed earlier this year on Mule Musiq, with the final chapter completing the set courtesy of the revered Tokyo-based imprint.
