Tokyo’s NTT Intercommunication Center holds Ryuichi Sakamoto tribute exhibition

As a tribute to the legacy of the visionary composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, who passed away in March, an exhibition is now underway at the NTT Intercommunication Center (ICC) in Tokyo.

Co-curated by Daito Manabe, member of the Tokyo-based creative collective Rhizomatiks and a close friend of Sakamoto himself, the exhibition showcases works inspired by the performance data left behind by the late musician.

Featuring an array of diverse works by domestic and international artists who shared a special bond with Sakamoto, the exhibition highlights his profound influence on music, media, and art.

Sakamoto held a deep personal fascination with the Internet since its early days in the 1990s, actively utilising the medium to host online live events and other initiatives as a proactive endeavour to integrate media technology into his artistic creations.

The exhibition stands as a deep homage to Sakamoto's significant impact on the world of media art.

Throughout the years, Sakamoto nurtured strong connections with the venue, collaborating on notable events like the 2005 concert associated with the exhibition titled Laurie Anderson: The Record of the Time. Moreover, he played a pivotal role in commemorative exhibitions alongside Takatani Shiro, marking the ICC's tenth and twentieth anniversaries.
