R&B and soul singer Angie Stone dies in car crash aged 63

R&B and soul singer Angie Stone has died aged 63 after being involved in a car crash, her daughter has confirmed.

The GRAMMY-nominated artist, best known for her 2001 hit ‘Wish I Didn’t Miss You’, was on her way home from a show on Saturday, March 1, when the van she was travelling in overturned.

The crash happened in the early hours of the morning in Montgomery, Alabama, according to reports. Stone was the only fatality in the accident, but eight others she was travelling with–which included crew and backing singers–were injured.

“My mommy is gone,” her daughter, Diamond Stone, wrote in a post on Facebook.

Angie Stone was born in Columbia, South Carolina, where she first found fame as part of the all-female trio The Sequence in the late ‘70s at just 16 years old.

Before the group disbanded in the ‘80s, they released a hit track, ‘Funk You Up’, which would later be sampled by the likes of Bruno Mars and Dr. Dre.

Stone later joined the group Vertical Hold in the early ‘90s as the lead vocalist. Together, they released two albums, and found acclaim with their popular track ‘Seems You’re Much Too Busy’.

Her first full-length solo release would come later in the ‘90s, after signing to Arista Records. She found international success with her second album, ‘Mahogany Soul’, which contained the 2001 smash hit ‘Wish I Didn’t Miss You’.

“What a sad day hearing of the passing of Angie Stone. The world has lost a true musical legend,” Carl Cox said in tribute on Instagram.

“Her amazing track ‘Wish I Didn’t Miss You’ will always hold a most special place in my heart. I wish I’d had the opportunity to meet her & talk about the music & what it’s meant to me. Her passing reminds us that life is precious and fleeting.”
