Peggy Gou to bring Berghain to Bali, complete with mandatory rice paddy queue
The superstar DJ has reportedly secured a plot in Canggu for the brutalist superclub, where the door policy will be decided by a spiritual healer
Peggy Gou has announced an exclusive partnership to open the first official international outpost of Berlin's legendary techno institution, Berghain.
Dubbed Berghain East, the ambitious project will be located in the heart of Canggu, Bali. According to leaked architectural plans, the venue will faithfully recreate the imposing, brutalist concrete aesthetic of the original former power plant with a tropical edge.
The main room will have a Funktion-One soundsystem above a reclaimed teak dancefloor, and the Panorama Bar will be rebuilt as an open-air bamboo structure overlooking a nearby water temple.
“I wanted to bridge the gap between the uncompromising energy of Berlin techno and the mindful, holistic lifestyle of Bali,” Gou stated in a press release issued this morning. “Berghain East is about finding your centre at 145 BPM, while wearing head-to-toe black linen.”
The most controversial aspect of the new venture, however, is its door policy.
In a nod to the notoriously strict entry requirements of the Berlin original, Berghain East will implement a gruelling queuing system designed to test the spiritual fortitude of prospective clubbers.

Attendees will be required to line up in a rice paddy for a minimum of four hours. During this time, the use of smartphones, vapes, and discussing cryptocurrency will be strictly prohibited.
Instead of facing Sven Marquardt, entry will be determined by a local spiritual healer, who will assess each person's aura and chakra alignment before deciding if their “energy is correct for the dark room”.

“It's a necessary filter,” explained a source close to the project. “If your aura is clouded by too many matcha lattes or unresolved influencer drama, you simply won't survive the intensity of a nine-hour closing set by Ben Klock.”
Inside, phones won't be covered with stickers, but will be confiscated by wellness coaches and replaced with raw cacao beans. Dark rooms will offer sound baths and guided breathwork between sets.
Construction starts next month, with an opening during peak dry season. The opening weekend is rumoured to feature a 24-hour back-to-back from Marcel Dettmann and a local gamelan orchestra.
