New TV series Ibiza87 to chronicle the story of acid house and rave

Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh has been confirmed as a writer for forthcoming TV series Ibiza87, "telling the incredible story of the birth and rise to dominance of a cultural and music revolution."

The drama, also written by award-winning screenwriter Dean Cavanagh, will be loosely based around Nicky Holloway, Paul Oakenfold and Danny Rampling, detailing their story from an Ibiza holiday in 1987 to introducing acid house and spearheading the rave movement in the UK.

The press release reads: "Like the missing link between 24 Hour Party People and Straight Outta Compton, Ibiza87 chronicles the rollercoaster highs and lows, the drug-fuelled excess and the untold riches through to the rivalries, violence and arrests of an incredible period in British music culture."

Paul Oakenfold says: "I’m very excited about this project. As you know, it ties in with the 30-year anniversary of our trip to Ibiza and what followed thereafter; the birth of the dance music club and festival scene as we know it today. It's great to celebrate with this project as well as my world tour this year which is about just that, three generations of dance music."

Nicky Holloway, Danny Rampling and Paul Oakenfold will compile and curate an "incredible acid house soundtrack" for the series, which is yet to have a release date.

Leo Pearlman from Fulwell 73 is producing the show Josephine Rose of Sony Pictures International is the executive producer.
