Korg reveals long-awaited microKORG successor, microKORG 2

Two decades on from the microKORG, manufacturer Korg has unveiled the microKORG 2 — which is set for release in June 2024.

Revealed during the NAMM 2024 conference in California, The microKORG 2 is described as a portable, pro-grade synth that builds on the best features of its predecessor, according to Music Radar.

The original microKORG, released in 2002, was popularised as an entry-level choice for would-be music makers. Recognised for its accessibility, the microKORG became renowned as an affordable, versatile, and portable synth that didn’t compromise on sound.

Maintaining the simplicity of its predecessor, the microKORG 2 retains much of the design it first became favoured for, with the addition of a high-res 2.8-inch colour display.

Though, the screen is not the only original feature that’s received a modern update; the synth sees the original 37-key velocity-sensitive keyboard return "with upgraded playability and feel."

As with the original synth, the microKORG 2 is fully digital and built around an enhanced virtual analogue engine to mimic that classic analogue sound.

With 8 voices of polyphony, the microKORG 2 introduces richer vocal texture potential and 512 presets, labelled by genre for ease. Making a return is the classic gooseneck microphone as well as the built-in vocoder from the original model.

Users can expect three FX categories: delay, modulation, and reverb. Alongside new vocal features, including integrated pitch correction and harmonization, is a loop recorder for creating layered compositions.

As for I/O, the microKORG 2 introduces a USB-C port as well as a damper/switch jack in addition to MIDI I/O and stereo line out.

The microKORG 2 is scheduled for release June 2, for more information head to Korg's website.
