Meet an 82-year-old dumpling-maker in Japan who moonlights as a techno DJ

Her name is Sumiko Iwamuro, also known as DJ Sumirock in Tokyo's music community, and she’s an 82-year-old dumpling-maker who also happens to be a techno DJ.

Sumiko Iwamuro has been running a gyoza (dumpling) restaurant with her brother for over 60 years and it was only in her 70s that she took up DJing after spending a year at DJ school and DJ Sumirock was born.

Now you can find her spinning once a month in Tokyo’s red light district at nightclubs like DecaBarZ but she aspires to one day play in New York City.

In an interview with Reuters, she said of her hobby: “When I spin the tables, I just want to match the beat, choose the right music, but the best thing is for my audience to enjoy themselves."

"It’s fundamentally techno music,” she added. “But just that would be boring so I add jazz, French chanson and today I’ve added a bit of classical music."

Watch a clip of her DJing below.
