Spend your next 233 hours in the world of Murakami's favourites
If you are a fan of writer Haruki Murakami, you might know that besides being an acclaimed writer of international bestsellers, he’s also a maniacal vinyl collector. His fascination with albums began at the tender age of 13, and he opened a coffeehouse and jazz bar with his wife at 25. Along the way, he’s collected a lot of albums. Two years ago, having collected over 10,000 records by then, he donated part of his vinyl archives to Tokyo’s Waseda University.
While jazz and classical are the novelist's favourites, Murakami says: "Duke Ellington once said, 'There are simply two kinds of music, good music and the other kind.' In that sense, jazz and classical music are fundamentally the same. The pure joy one experiences listening to 'good' music transcends questions of genre."
Now, thanks to Spotify, some kind soul named Masamaro Fujiki has compiled a playlist of Haruki Murakami's favourite vinyl tracks based on his past essays, interviews and Q&A from Murakami's 2015 limited-period website, 'Murakami San No Tokoro'. So if you're looking for a way to spend your next 233 hours, you can try soaking up jazz, pop, classical and everything else in Murakami's musical treasure trove:
