Introducing Mixmag Korea
Koreans now have a window into the international dance music community - in Korean
It’s a big day for Korean dance music fans – the Mixmag brand has officially entered Korea and is tailoring all its content to the local market as well as planning for Mixmag curated events.
Mixmag Korea will both siphon content from its international sister sites and translate it into Korean as well as offering original content written by local contributors. The site is live as of yesterday and you can view it here.
We chatted with Mixmag Korea’s editor-in-chief Min Byung Won, who also goes by Hospital Photograph, about the launch and why they felt it was the right time to introduce the brand to Korea.
Min explained to us that in the last two years Koreans experienced two tragic events that resulted in large losses of life. After the MERS epidemic and the sinking of the Sewol ferry, the economy went into a recession and it directly impacted the club and festival scene. But things are finally starting to improve and he wants to help steer things in the right direction.
“I think we're slowly recovering from all this and festivals are also being planned in the upcoming months. Many other event production companies are planning things too, not just Mixmag Korea, and we are trying to guide a path towards a better scene.”
With the scene in Seoul picking up again, he looks at Mixmag Korea as a way to help revive the dying scene in the Hongdae area while also boosting profiles in Seoul’s underground clubs, many of which can be found in Itaewon.
Of course there is always the city’s Gangnam area but its clubs are more commercially driven and Min’s master plan is to use the Mixmag brand to report on and do shows with great underground artists, focusing more on giving much needed exposure to that scene.
We’re excited for them and will be working closely with the whole Mixmag fam to give you coverage from all over the world. Stay tuned for more news from Korea.
