Instagram cracks down on copyrighted music while live streaming

DJs all around the world have been especially challenged for the past few months without being able to do what they do best — play music. Luckily for them, technology and social media have made it possible to share live streams with fans all over the world. More and more people have turned to Instagram to stay connected with their community — problem is, Instagram noticed.

With the increase of live streaming through their app, the has company decided to regulate this new trend because it has “also highlighted some confusion across the community — especially around the use of recorded music in Live on both Facebook and Instagram.”

As such, they’ve just unveiled clear guidelines concerning the use of music on the platform and said that if steps are not followed, live streams may be taken down or muted.

Instagram has also implemented a pop-up window that will warn live streamers not to play over 90 seconds of a song if they don’t own the rights. This is intended to give DJs a chance to change the music before there is an interruption (meaning being muted or blocked).

Instead of using songs DJs don’t own, Instagram is encouraging them to use Facebook's Sound Collection (of course they are), which includes thousands of tracks available to use in videos that you want to share on Facebook and Instagram.

To understand the full updates of Instagram, read the guidelines here.
