Ibiza officials announce plans to ban licenses for new nightclubs on the island

Ibiza officials have shared proposals that would put a ban on any new nightclubs opening in Ibiza.

According to a report from Periódico de Ibiza, Mariano Juan, the vice president of the Consell d'Eivissa, which acts as Ibiza's self-governing council, announced the plans during a PIAT (Plan for Intervention in Tourist Areas) plenary session on July 26.

"The proposal aims to contain the existing nightlife," Juan said during the session. "We believe there is already enough nightlife in certain areas and no more licenses should be granted."

The Vice President insisted that the Consell d'Eivissa "doesn't want legal leisure activities to disappear," noting that nightlife is a key driver in the island's economy and creates "thousands" of jobs. "There's nothing shameful about them; they're not a problem," he added. "They're part of Ibiza, and we should be proud of them."

Juan did note that a ban on new nightlife venues is already in place across most of Ibiza's municipalities, except for San Josep, a hilltop village in the south west of the island.

Elena López, who acts as a representative for the Ibiza wing of Spanish socialist party the PSOE, agreed with Juan's suggestion, adding that Ibiza "has become one enormous party venue. This model has gotten out of hand, and there's no room for families in it."
