Grimes' 'Darkseid' collaboration with 潘PAN gets the Richie Hawtin remix treatment

Canadian musician, singer, songwriter, producer, video director and visual artist Grimes has announced a remix collection from last years ' Miss Anthropocene' album. The all-new 'Rave Edition' features interpretations from some of the biggest names in dance, and includes an epic Richie Hawtin rework of 'Darkseid' – one of the standouts from the original album which features vocals from Taiwanese artist, PAN. Other notable remixers called in for the project are Âme & Tales Of Us, REZZ, and ANNA.

Also known as Aristophanes, 潘PAN was born and raised in Taipei and grew up in a household without TV or music. "My mother doesn't like music so I knew nothing about Taiwanese or Chinese pop singers,” she explained. “I didn't grow up in an environment where I can be into music so I heard nothing before the first time I heard the Mandarin rap song.” Her earliest exposure to music clearly made a dramatic impact, as her distinctive Mandarin rap flow is precisely what has helped her to gain international recognition. Indeed, Grimes first became aware of 潘PAN's music when she discovered her SoundCloud stream, directly leading to the pair collaborating. 'Darkseid' was the third such union between the two artists.

Remixer Richie Hawtin has been at the vanguard of the electronic underground for the best part of 30 years, ever since his Plastikman project exploded into the world in the early '90s. He's managed to maintain his position as one of the most in-demand DJs, producers and remixers throughout his career and is about as close to an underground megastar as it's possible to be. His version of 'Darkseid' is a far cry from the steady electro-pop groove of the original, where 潘PAN's rapid-fire vocal contrasts with Grimes seductive whispers. Hawtin ups the tempo to a club-friendly pace, stripping back the music and adding his unmistakable dark room stamp. The remix is likely to appeal to an entirely different fanbase, you can compare both versions here and take your pick from the strikingly different interpretations.

Grimes has been deep in the music game for well over a decade now, releasing wildly varied sounds that take in influences from alternative pop, hip hop, electronica and beyond. The talented creator also designs all of her album artwork, her illustrations have been exhibited at various high profile galleries, including Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. She is married to business magnate Elon Musk, with whom she has two children.

'Darkseid' by Grimes and PAN is out now as part of 'Miss Anthropocene – Rave Edition'. You can listen and buy it here
