Gorillaz are pushing their visual storytelling further with ‘The Mountain, The Moon Cave and The Sad God’, an animated short set to arrive on February 27 (February 28 in some parts of Asia).

The film serves as an artistic preview of their upcoming album, ‘The Mountain’.

A retro, hand-drawn trailer released on February 20 has already sparked excitement among fans. It follows the band’s iconic virtual members as they journey through a dense, mysterious jungle toward a looming mountain peak, underscored by ominous narration: “The Gorillaz went in search of something, but something was searching for them, at the top of The Mountain. A journey that should have been a dream soon became a nightmare.”

It continues: “They wanted to shoot a movie, but now, they are the movie. There is no way down The Mountain. At the top of The Mountain, they are at the bottom of the food chain. Don’t go up The Mountain. It’s a jungle out there.”

The film’s title appears to reference three tracks on the forthcoming album (‘The Mountain’, ‘The Moon Cave’ and ‘The Sad God’), hinting at a deeper narrative thread running throughout the project.

That cinematic scope, which includes touches of South Asian imagery, reflects the album’s global direction.

‘The Mountain’ was heavily shaped by recording sessions across India, incorporating Bollywood textures and collaborations with Indian musicians.

Collaborators include Indian classical flautist Ajay Prasanna, sitarist Anoushka Shankar, and jazz legend Asha Puthli, among others.

Other notable names who contributed their talents include Johnny Marr, Omar Souleyman, Black Thought and more.
