News Fred again.. on AI-generated music: “I’m not worried about the threat of AI”

Fred again.. has made his thoughts clear on the use of AI in the music production process.

Last week, the former Mixmag cover star took to Instagram, where he shared some notes he made on AI music last year, saying that he "feels them now more than ever".

"I’ve been thinking for a while, the opposite of AI music maybe isn't human music," he began in a series of Instagram stories. "It’s making music."

He continued: "The process is the magic. I think anyone who’s been lucky enough to make music, or make anything, has been able to feel this in different ways since forever."

The GRAMMY-winning producer said that he thinks this is "maybe why I've felt no pull whatsoever" and has "no desire" to try using AI when making music, a process that he calls his "meditation".

"I place so much of my identity in that process, and I haven't found that to be a negative place to put it," he continued. "Giving the process bit to a machine would be intrinsically contrary to what I love about the whole thing."

"The clumsy dedicated tumbling towards an idea is the thing we are most lucky to get to do," he added. "The hours and hours, and years and years, of endlessly trying to make the thing you wish could exist."

He concluded by saying that, while there are lots of things he’s worried about AI "threatening", music is not one of them, calling the process of making music his "daily compass".

Just last month, AI music generator platform Suno lost its first copyright infringement case, with a court ruling that it was in breach of both German and US copyright law, and that it had used, stored and reproduced copyrighted material without permission from licence holders.
