Darker Than Wax’s daytime series BREW makes comeback in August
Ahead of its relaunch at AIR CCCC, Dean Chew breaks down the journey behind Singapore’s long-running outdoor party
BREW, the daytime event series by Darker Than Wax, returns on Saturday, August 23, 2025, after nearly two years on hiatus.
This long-awaited edition marks a new chapter for one of Singapore’s most recognised alternative-format parties, taking place at AIR CCCC's outdoor lawn in Dempsey.
Originally launched in the courtyard of Chye Seng Huat Hardware in Jalan Besar, BREW grew from a casual vinyl session into a key fixture in Singapore’s independent music calendar.
“It was really organic,” shares Darker Than Wax co-founder Dean Chew with Mixmag Asia about the series' humble beginnings.
“I pitched the idea to the owner about using the courtyard for a lazy daytime vinyl listening session. This was sometime in 2015, 2016? Naturally, as the months go by, the word got around and before we knew it, it started to gain its own life and a community was borne out of this one idea.”
Over time, BREW evolved into larger block parties, drawing attention for its diverse music programming and open, social atmosphere.
“It was about shifting perceptions that you don’t always have to stick to one particular music genre to keep people engaged,” Dean explains.

“The spirit of BREW is fundamentally about sharing a diverse world of music and connecting those dots. And through that, it brought people from so many different walks of life together in that one space—it was a very powerful and humbling moment,” he adds.
The series then paused due to logistical challenges. “BREW sort of outgrew the courtyard and we were getting way to many attendees, and as a result, noise complaints started to occur more frequently,” Dean shares.
“Fast forward to early 2025, AIR approached us with the idea of activating its lawn. We went down for a recce and I guess everything fell into place!”
