A couple of years ago, Thailand lost its de facto party starter: Dan Buri left back to the hinterlands of his childhood and took up residence in Berlin. The pandemic shook his (and everyone’s) plans, which might have meant fewer gigs for the DJ, but it gave his bones as a producer a chance to strengthen.
Perhaps one of the buzziest releases of his post-pandemic work lands the half-Thai, half-German DJ on Get Physical Music, a Berlin-based imprint founded by M.A.N.D.Y and Booka Shade in 2002, with a cosmic rich house tune called ‘Zion’. Funky in feeling thanks to an Afro-tinged drum beat, the tune feels a touch lighter than the deep, dark and melodic style that Buri is synonymous with, an avenue we hope signals a positive post-pandemic shift into a brighter world for us all.
The track was premiered by Dancefloor Romancer, and you can listen to it below.
The 15-track release is part of a greater compilation of tunes called Berlin Gets Physical that offers an authentic snapshot of the contemporary underground sounds of Berlin. Other artists featured include Cook Strummer, Marvin Jam, Le Mythe, Los Cabra, Daniel Jaeger, Valenti, Manuel Sahagun, Air Horse One and more.
The compilation was released both digitally as well as on two different vinyl versions, including one special edition that is produced together with the Belgian gallery Mazel Galerie with a cover design by Lyon-based street artist Brusk.
That all said, Berlin is also bidding farewell to Dan Buri as he departs back to the sunny shores and dank clubs of Thailand, where he will surely be welcomed back by the music community that he helped shape all those years ago.
‘Zion’ by Dan Buri was released on September 23, 2023 as part of Berlin Gets Physical on Get Physical Music. Buy it here.
