Accra's Oroko Radio announces indefinite hiatus

Accra-based online radio station Oroko Radio has announced its "indefinite hiatus" from broadcasting.

Announced via an Instagram post on April 7, the team behind the station said: "Oroko Radio is a not-for-profit organisation, with the majority of our work funded by grants, collaborations or done by the team for free."

"Sadly, we do not have the resources to keep broadcasts running in the long term, and our work has become unsustainable," the statement adds. "Our small team has suffered from serious burnout trying to keep the station alive."

First launched in 2022 by Kikelomo, Nico Adomako, Naëmi Ada and Truseye, Oroko Radio was established with the aim of showcasing the diverse talent across Ghana and the African diaspora.

Last month, Oroko Radio held an Archives Radio Pop-Up in collaboration with Carhartt WIP featuring sets from 99 Phaces, Edinam, Araba, B Frvnkie and TMSKDJ.

In its statement yesterday, Oroko's team thanked listeners for their support "over the last four years," adding that they "hope to see you again at some point in the near future."

The team also shared a list of ways supporters can help the station through initiatives such as buying merch, subscribing to their Patreon, advocating for Oroko Radio on social media and attending their upcoming events.
