Welcome to ‘Mengzy Selects’, a monthly video column which features five recently released tracks by producers and labels in Asia and across the Asian diaspora. Your host is Mengzy: a Hong Kong-based DJ and producer, PhD in musicology, music journalist, and co-founder of Feed the Dragon.

Mannuma ‘Square124’

The 2023-2024 West Harlem Compilation has finally hit Bandcamp, providing fans of the storied Kyoto venue another way to support its soundproofing renovation efforts. There are 39 tracks here and among them Mannuma’s ‘Square124’, Hizuo’s ‘Quantum Leap’ and Stones Taro’s ‘Touch Me’ bootleg are absolute standouts.

Kanetaker ‘Generations’

Kanetaker recently curated an EP of all-Chinese UKG productions for Southampton-based label, Garage Shared. His contribution, ‘Generations’, opens ‘Slithered Grooves’ with the highest energy of the release as well as being our favourite.

Raf Reza ‘Mirror of Love’

Bangladeshi-Canadian producer Raf Reza’s debut album ‘Ekbar’ explores UK soundsystem aesthetics and combines them with his personal cultural influences. Dub reggae offering ‘Mirror of Love’ exemplifies this beautifully, fusing Bangladeshi samples with ethereal arps and bass pressure.

Submerse ‘You've Been Here Before’

Tokyo-based Submerse debuted on Bristol’s Hardcore Energy this month with ‘Test Signals’, a 90’s-inspired jungle EP. Opener ‘You’ve Been Here Before’ practically sings with its delicious pitched snare runs.

GoodMostlyBad ‘YOU CALL THAT BREAKFAST’

The last time we covered a GoodMostlyBad self-release on the column was exactly two years ago with ‘Pum Pum City’. Now, the leftfield club producer is back with a broken-meets-bass that Tony Quattro rightly calls a “Breakfast of champions”.
