Mengzy Selects - 033 / March

Welcome to ‘Mengzy Selects’, a monthly video column which features five recently released tracks by producers and labels in Asia and across the Asian diaspora. Your host is Mengzy: a Hong Kong-based DJ and producer, PhD in musicology, music journalist, and co-founder of Feed the Dragon.

Japanese MCs ONJUICY and 森 (Mori) collabed on a UK funky and grime-inspired killer this month via TREKKIE TRAX. Produced by Tokyo-based Lowki, ‘単純明快 (Tanjun Meikai) translates to “clear and simple” but the beats are anything but.

Out of Hanoi, SYS Sister Sounds released ‘Touch Your Soul’ on March 19. It's the lead single from Maggie Tra’s forthcoming ‘Disco Lady’ EP. Fresh and funky, ‘Touch Your Soul’ has the label head in good form.

Tapan Raj and Anuhska Menon Productions, or TRAMP, dropped an insane bootleg of Missy Elliot’s ‘Get Ur Freak On’ that sees Timbaland’s Punjabi sampled classic come full circle back to the subcontinent. Its percussion is in overdrive and at 178 BM it’s primed for your drum ’n’ bass sets.

Hekdb has been on a roll recently with standout EPs from artists like Xylon and Lemonfacer, who we featured on our December selects. Leftfield techno tracks like ‘Insight’ by HAWLIE are exactly why we’re continuing to pay attention to this maturing label.

March 10 saw New World Audio’s latest EP out on dubplate and DSPs. For the 2-tracker, the London-based label signed atmospheric and textured productions from Japanese dubstep artists CITY1 and Ryoichi Ueno.
